War is an enormous investment of resources - and of course it gets people killed! Since most of us prefer not to get involved in a fight that doesn't effect us directly, they was considerable sentiment in the US to stay out of the fight. It was far from the US - across the ocean. Unlike most of the European countries involved at the start of the war, the US had no treaties committing them to get involved if, for example, country A went to war with country B. Eventually it became apparent that it WAS effecting the US as the attacks on US ships carrying goods and people to and from Europe were attacked by the surface ships and submarines of some of the warring nations. Since the German navy was doing the most damage to US shipping, the US got involved on the side that was opposing them and their allies.
It wanted to stay isolated. It did not want to get involved into a 'European' affair. The German sinking of the Lusitania was a reason the U.S. entered Worl War I and the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was the reason the U.S. entered World War II.
There were 116,000 US casualties. 4,744,000 were involved.
The US is not yet involved in world 11. The next world war should be WWIII so they have a way to go.
The people that were involved in the cold war was the Soviet Union, Communist world, and the non-communist world (The US and the USSR)
The sinking of the Lusitania caused the US to get involved.
