Vietnam is a communist country because the government controlls everything and they have a central economy. _____ North Vietnam was communist, South Vietnam was not and did not want to be. That, in a nutshell, was what the Vietnam War was about. When all of the western countries pulled out of Vietnam, the North overran the South and both countries were reunified as Vietnam under a communist government based in Hanoi.

The American troops thought South Vietnam could finish the war alone and pulled out many soldiers. The South became weak and the North invaded. They eventually made it to the South Vietnamese capital, which I can't think of the name right now, and the remain Americans tried to pulled out as many civilians as they could.

The north of Vietnam was the communist as the south was democratic. That is why U.S fought together with the south against the north to "Stop the spread of communism"

(President Lyndon Johnson was afraid that communism will spread towards America, which is why the Americans meddled into Vietnam's business)

1. The communist North Vietnamese Army/Air Force/etc. were FAR more determined in their fighting than were the South Vietnamese. There were many determined South Vietnamese military men (Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, etc.) but not enough of them to stem the communist tide. 2. The North Vietnamese were fortunate in having a "Korean War (1950-1953)" as a precedence. The US invaded NORTH Korea during that war and ended up fighting Red China because of it. The US wasn't about to repeat that miscalculation again; there would be NO invasion of North Vietnam. 3. The Communists/North Vietnam were again fortunate in not having to fight their war on a peninsula, again, as the Korean War had to be fought. Korea's geographic location of being located upon a peninsula allowed the communists to be trapped; without having a navy to challenge the US Navy...the US Navy controlled the sea, therefore the communists could NOT re-supply ANYWHERE except from across the Red Chinese border. And that area could be easily be bombarded. Bottom line: The communists picked the right place, the right time, and combined it with determination...which led them to victory.

North Vietnam's leader, Ho Chi Minh had been a communist since the 1920's. During the French Indochina War 1946-1954 (also known as the 1st Indochina War) N. Vietnam, under Ho's leadership, received aid from the Soviet Union. The US supplied aid to the French (Aircraft, tanks, helmets, rifles, machineguns, ammunition, etc.); the US was busy fighting the Korean War at the time (1950-1953), another communist action.
