The redcoats, or British soldiers, set up camp in the center of Boston primarily to maintain control over the increasingly rebellious colonial population and to enforce British laws and taxes. The presence of troops aimed to deter resistance and quell unrest following events like the Boston Tea Party. Additionally, Boston's strategic location and its role as a major port made it a vital area for British military operations during the American Revolutionary War.

As people, there were not many differences between the British colonists and the British Redcoats. As an army, the colonists used guerilla warfare . . . they would sneak up, wipe out some Redcoats, then disappear. As an army the Redcoats would march into an area where they thought the colonist's army might be, then camped for the night. Of course, this allowed the colonists to slip away in the night. Often, the Redcoat army would march up with many, many soldiers then build a camp complete with tents, cooking stations, fires, and so forth. They might stay there for weeks. Oddly, the same thing happened in World War Two. The English general, Montgomery, often did the same: set up camp and take rest and repair time (R & R) while the German army either sped away, or attacked them before they had many defenses set up and ready.
