Mckinely was in favour of becoming more involved in world affairs, especially in trade. In 1898 the Spanish-American war resulted in America gaining control of Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. This was a turning point in history as previously the USA had been isolationist and looked down upon imperialist ideologies.
