After the war USA and USSR fought (not literally) for power in post-war world. Europe was divided in eastern Europe, which was under USSR's subordination and western Europe, which actively cooperated with USA. The tension between these two nations grew resulting in cold war.

They did not land anywhere. The cold war was not fought on a battleground. It was a period of tension and an arms race between the west and east. Most notably between the USA and the USSR.
Well it was mainly that the USA had dropped the atomic bomb on Japan. But since the USSR hadn't been told about the dropping of the atomic bomb before hand this then increased the suspicion and tension between the USA and the USSR. This could have then potentially led to a fall-out between them and then possibly a war. Hope this helps. :)
