The US had placed an oil embargo on Japan. The Japanese were totally dependent on other countries for their petroleum and other Natural Resources. They invaded China and killed thousands of Chinese. They also went to South East Asia to get oil. The Americans were not going to sell them oil until they stopped these actions. They wanted the oil in the Dutch East Indies. So they got the idea to annihilate the US Navy so they could not go after the Japanese once they arrived in the Dutch East Indies. Their plan backfired however when they failed to destroy the carriers. The rest is history.
