I have a buddy at work who swears by the new Chinese bikes, like Lifan, Kymco, etc., & says they are "just like Japanese". However you can see the quality is significantly lower. One of his kids just broke... the engine mount! Enough said. Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki are great bikes from Japan, for a lttle more money, lotsa parts available, even from the dealer most times. Performance may not be sizzling, but most are simple 4-stroke designs that give you some better torque for the hills. This is your "I don't wanna have to ever tune, tweak, or touch the engine" option. Your 2-stroke options are broader, but you have to mix the oil into the gas: Puch and Sachs are the great bikes from the past, and Sachs still makes a great bike called the Madass (which is now a 4-stroke). Most Puchs are one-speed, so the Sachs' 2-speed tranny helps a bit in hillier areas. The Tomos is probably the best mix of speed, reliability, cost, and available parts. Peugeot has a nice transmission if you are doing lotsa hills and don't want to learn how to shift, or pedal. Garellis are extremely simple bikes that are easy to work on. I'll get beat up if I don't mention Motobecane, Husqvarna, and Vespa as very good options. These 30-year-old mopeds are around for a reason; they were built well. -Argy
