A Honda FourTrax 250 can overheat due to several factors, including low coolant levels, a malfunctioning thermostat, or a clogged radiator that prevents proper cooling. Poor maintenance, such as not changing the oil regularly, can also lead to overheating. Additionally, prolonged use in high temperatures or under heavy loads without adequate breaks can strain the engine and contribute to overheating. Lastly, electrical issues, like a failing cooling fan, can further exacerbate the problem.

The starter reduction gears from a 1985 Honda FourTrax 250 are generally not compatible with the 1986 or 1987 models due to differences in design and specifications. While the overall engine and transmission may appear similar, manufacturers often make subtle revisions that can affect part compatibility. It's best to consult a parts manual or a dealership to confirm compatibility before making any replacements.
