Is the voltage regulator any good? If it is, you could have a short anywhere on the bike.
The stator is located behind the compensator sprocket inside the front of the primary cover.
Might be a defective voltage regulator (not opening circuit on shut-down) Or a bad stator. (if the battery doesn't charge at all.) Or an electrical short.
Way behind the clutch.
To check a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy stator, first, disconnect the battery to ensure safety. Remove the stator cover and inspect for any visible damage or burning. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the stator’s terminals; it should typically read around 0.2 to 0.5 ohms. Additionally, check for continuity to ground; there should be no continuity, indicating that the stator is not shorted.
A bad stator causes the battery not to charge. That makes the battery light come on. Some other things that can cause the battery light to come on are corroded or frayed cables or connections or a loose/bad ground cable.
stator or starter?
A common cause for the stator to move back and forth on a Harley is worn stator mounting bolts. These bolts can become loose over time due to vibration and engine movement. It is important to check and properly tighten the mounting bolts to prevent further shifting of the stator.
To change the stator on a 2009 Harley-Davidson Road King, first disconnect the battery and remove the primary cover by taking off the bolts and gaskets. Next, drain the primary fluid and remove the clutch assembly to access the stator. Disconnect the wiring harness from the stator, then unscrew and remove the stator from its housing. Install the new stator by reversing the process, ensuring all connections are secure and the primary cover is properly sealed before refilling with fluid.
It is behind the sprocket shaft nut.
Many reasons are possible. Bad battery or discharging due to a short in the wiring or bad voltage regulator or stator is bad. Just too name the most common.
