Not really familar with the model, but, that means that the machine is getting too much air from somewhere else. Check around the carb.
Your Briggs and Stratton 5.5hp only runs with the choke on because it needs a tune up.

You are getting too much air into your engine, if this is a motorcycle, ATV or dirt bike carb try adjusting the air screw.
Just to the right of the LH grip you have rotating choke lever. All the way up is no choke, Rotated all the way down is fully choked.
there should be an idle adjustment on the right side of it
on the hand grip were ur brake is on right side!!
Carburetor not adjusted correctly
You might check your primer bulb. Mine was cracked and the only way it would run was with the choke on about half way. I changed the primer bulb -- problem solved. Hope this helps.
