How are George Etienne Cartier and Jacques Cartier related?

They aren't.George Etienne Cartier's family claimed to be distantly related to the explorer Jacques Cartier through the male line. Not sure how distantly related. The details aren't clear. He may have been a descendent of Pierre Cartier, Jacques' brother. George Etienne's family came from the same small village Prulier, Anger, France, as did Jacques Cartier. This may simply have been a family legend, rather than fact. Hard to determine.RF this book:Sir George Etienne Cartier Bart: His Life and TimesBy James Boyd, John BoydPublished by Ayer Publishing, 1914ISBN 0836958748, 9780836958744439 pages

Why did George-Etienne Cartier join confederation need short answer plzz?

Ok, first if this is for a test or something this is cheating... At one time, George Etienne Cartier shared the job of Prime Minister of Canada with another Father of Confederation, John A. Macdonald (term of 1858-1862). As a proponent of the Grand Trunk Railway, he wanted to see a united Canada sharing trade and commerce. He was from Lower Canada (basically today's Province of Quebec). Cartier was conciliatory in terms of relationships with the rest of Canada. His partnership with Macdonald made for an unstoppable team. Quite basically Cartier was a team player and a moderate. Pragmatic opinions in Quebec at the time were concerned a French-speaking free-standing entity would quickly be swallowed up by the United States and so it made better sense to combine with the new nation being formed.See if you can find any of the short articles on the Conferences leading up to Confederation: especially the one which took place in Quebec City in 1866 - published by the Canadian Historical Association as booklets reprinted from articles in that Association's periodical.Source:Bothwell, Robert - The Penguin History of Canada. MacDonald-Cartier Freeway (John A. MacDonald, George-Etienne Cartier) ===================================== You might be surprised to learn that the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway is not part of the Trans-Canada Highway. The highway was so named to honour the two major founding fathers of Confederation and to promote national unity. P.S. There's no capital 'd' in Macdonald. And there is a hyphen in Trans-Canada.
