The word Redneck originally comes from the the poor and often badly educated white people that worked the land in the US south. The sun beating down on them as they worked had a tendency to make the back of their necks red. The fact that education played a minor part in their lives put them in a position wher they were easily led into blaming others for their hard life and this is why so many of them were involved in actions against black people, especially in the days after emancipation when freed slaves were competing directly with them for work. Today it depends more on the induvidual. however the shalow uneducated and unempathetic atitude of a racist is today still accompanied with the old term redneck.
