No you can use your PS3 for much more than just games and if you have an internet connection you can spend hours laying Playstation Home. The System show show whenever it is on and putting a game in is one way or turning it on. You can also press the Playstation emblem on your Dual Shock 3 controller to turn it on without getting up.

Will a ps1 work without memory cards?

You can play any Playstation One game without the use of a memory card. However, you will not be able to save your game. This goes for playing PSOne games on both the Playstation, Playstation 2, or a PSOne Classic on a PSP. (Though chances are since PSOne Classics can only be purchased over Playstation Network that you already have a memory stick to save onto.) If playing a PSOne Classic on a Playstation 3, you can save straight to the console's hard disc.
