What was George Washington's age when he fought in the french and Indian wars?

In April 1754, (at the age of 22) on his way to establish a post at the Forks of the Ohio (the current site of Pittsburgh), Washington learned that the French had already erected a fort there. Warned that the French were advancing, he quickly threw up fortifications at Great Meadows, Pa., aptly naming the entrenchment Fort Necessity, and marched to intercept advancing French troops. In the resulting skirmish the French commander the sieur de Jumonville was killed and most of his men were captured. Washington pulled his small force back into Fort Necessity where he was overwhelmed (July 3) by the French in an all-day battle fought in a drenching rain. Surrounded by enemy troops, with his food supply almost exhausted and his dampened ammunition useless, Washington capitulated. Under the terms of the surrender signed that day, he was permitted to march his troops back to Williamsburg. Discouraged by his defeat and angered by discrimination between British and colonial officers in rank and pay, he resigned his commission near the end of 1754. The next year, however, he volunteered to join British general Edward Braddock's expedition against the French. When Braddock was ambushed by the French and their Indian allies on the Monongahela River, Washington, although seriously ill, tried to rally the Virginia troops. Whatever public criticism attended the debacle, Washington's own military reputation was enhanced, and in 1755, at the age of 23, he was promoted to colonel and appointed commander in chief of the Virginia militia, with responsibility for defending the frontier. In 1758 he took an active part in Gen. John Forbes's successful campaign against Fort Duquesne.

Who was general braddock?

best remembered for his command of a disastrous expedition against French Canada in 1755, in which he lost his life.

What mistakes did Edward Braddock make?

Appointed shortly afterwords to command against the French in America, he landed in Virginia on 20 February 1755 with two regiments of British regulars. He met with several of the colonial governors at the Congress of Alexandria on 14 April and was persuaded to undertake vigorous actions against the French. A general from Massachusetts would attack at Fort Niagara, General Johnson at Crown Point, Colonel Monckton at Fort Beausejour on the Bay of Fundy. He would lead an Expedition against Fort Duquesne at the Forks of the Ohio. After some months of preparation, in which he was hampered by administrative confusion and want of resources, the Braddock expedition took the field with a picked column, in which George Washington served as a volunteer officer. The column crossed the Monongahela River on 9 July 1755, and almost immediately afterwords encountered an Indian and French force. Braddock's troops were completely surprised and routed, and Braddock, rallying his men time after time, fell at last, mortally wounded by a shot through the chest. Braddock was borne off the field by Washington and another officer, and died on 13 July 1755, just four days after the battle. Before he died Braddock left Washington his ceremonial sash that he wore with his battle uniform. Reportedly, Washington never went anywhere without this sash for the rest of his life, be it as the Commander of the Colonial Army or with his presidential duties. He was buried just west of Great Meadows, where the remnants of the column halted on its retreat to reorganize. Braddock was buried in the middle of the road and wagons were rolled over top of the grave site to prevent his body from being discovered and desecrated. George Washington presided at the burial service, as the chaplain had been severely wounded.

What was the significance of edward braddock?

There are several reasons Braddock was important. The fact that he lost the Battle of Monongahela is significant in that it propelled a young Virginian into a spotlight he would never leave: George Washington. It was Washington who took command after Braddock and his other officers were wounded or killed during this battle. Braddock also may be noted for showing the colonists how to organize an army. Working with Governor's from up and down the East Coast as well as Benjamin Franklin, Braddock assembled a substantially supplied fighting force for his march to Fort Duquesne, his goal was actually to capture Fort Niagara. Braddock set out with his troops from Fort Cumberland on May 29, 1755 using an Indian trail named for Delaware chief Nemacolin. While a a discern-able trail it was ill equipped for the five mile long army train that Braddock was forging through the wilderness. As such he essentially built a road to Pittsburgh. This same road, Braddocks Road, would be the beginnings of the National Road, the first federal highway project from the federal government. Many forget that because of the debt incurred by the British during the French and Indian war they imposed taxes on the colonist to recoup some of their investment. Stamp tax, Tea Tax, etc. This engagement was very much a precursor to the American Revolution. Colonialist spent six years becoming better soldiers during this time. For decades Braddock's defeat at Monongahela was attributed to an "ambush" and poor fighting strategy. History shows that the clash with the French was as much as a surprise to them as the British and colonists. It also appears the British were not so overwhelmed by the French and Indians fighting from the trees as it was the closeness of their surroundings. Perhaps had Braddock or Washington dispersed their troops in smaller units up into the trees and around behind the French the shear overwhelming number of soldiers would have been able to sustain the battle, drive the French back to Duquesne and give Braddock the quick victory he had promised. After Braddock's defeat and subsequent death three days later the British basically abandoned the western frontier for the time being to the French. Had Braddock won, moved on to Fort Niagara the US may well have included Canada today as well. But then...who knows?
