India has played host to many wars, starting with Alexander the Great's invaded in 325 BC. Remember that the trade caravans running from Europe to China crossed the northern part of India-Kashmir-Pakistan, Afghanistan, the region was known to the traders, plus both the Christian and Muslim spread into the area.

In the 1220's Gengis Khan conquered India on his way into Poland and Hungary, and the Mongol Empire didn't leave until approx 1405. The Sultanate of Dehli kept the Mongols in the north, and beat back Timur (Tamerlane) in 1398. His descendant, Babur the Conqueror, invaded India in 1526, again conquering the north.

Following the first and Second Angllo-Sikh Wars of the 1840's nn 1857 the Indian rose against the British in the bloody Great Sepoy Rebellion. The largest and most brutal war, however, killing one million-plus, was when Pakistan withdrew from India in 1947 and then four wars 1948-1965-1971-1999 with Pakistan, primarily over Kashmir and the Siachen Glacier area.
