Amtrak trains run between New York City (Penn Station) and Houston, Texas. I am including a link to the Amtrak homepage, where you can buy tickets. At the Amtrak homepage, in the "From" and "To" fields, you enter "NYP" (for New York Penn Station) under "From," and "HOS" (for Houston, Texas) under "To." Then you select the date and time you want to travel, the number of tickets you need, and whether you need a one-way or round-trip ticket.
Once you've entered in all the information, you will be taken to a list of departure times to choose from (although often, there is only one choice, because often, there is only one train per day going to a particular destination). You select a departure time, and you will be taken to the next screen, where you enter in your credit card information and pay for the tickets.
You can have the tickets mailed to you, or you can pick them up from the electronic kiosks at the station. That is what I usually do, when I take Amtrak. You just put your credit card in the slot, and the machine prints out your ticket(s).
edit: The answer above is not entirely true, currently and during times of hurricane seasons for the gulf coast region connecting Houston to New York trains are discontinued due to tracks being flooded by hurricane storms.

Therefore, if u cannot get a ticket(like myself) from Houston to NewYork, try dallas to NewYork...
