How come that the border between the US and Canada isn't straight all the way?

The border between Canada and the US is not straight for several reasons; The border generally follows a line set by lines of longitude (which strictly speaking is not a straight line to start with as the curviture of the earth must also be considered. ) The Great Lakes were also taken into account as well as established settlements.
