Mayans (Maya) as individual people died, and die, like everyone else - accident, disease, old age. Maya as a people are still very much alive, contrary to popular belief in the United States. During the Classical Mayan period, many Maya lived in city states, similarly to the ancient Greeks. Now many Maya live in villages and towns, or on farms, and some have migrated to big cities in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, and other countries around the world, particularly Canada and the United States. There are currently about 7 million Maya people, speaking more than 20 Mayan languages, with many people speaking Spanish, English, etc.

Noone knows how the Mayans disappear. There are many different theories. Some say that they all starved, anther one is that when they lose faith in their gods their civilization would just disappear into the forest and that is what apparently happened.
The Mayans did not vanish. They still exist. They still live from Mexico to Nicaragua. Only their city building culture vanished. About 1100 AD, a great improvement in a particular implement for waging war occurred. Mayan cities that had been unwalled suddenly had walls build around them. Then one by one Mayan cities became abandoned. No one is sure why warfare suddenly erupted. In the 1500s, there were people still alive who could read the Maya symbols. They Maya used a syllabary like the Cherokee Indians instead of using an Alphabet as we do. The fact that they knew their written language in the 1500s, indicates they kept their culture alive.
