The cold war was a time when citizens of the United States viewed themselves as competitors. We had to WIN the Space Race; we HAD to land a man on the moon FIRST! We HAD to have the FASTEST cars! We HAD to have the BEST fighter pilots! We HAD to BEAT the Communists in Vietnam! The United States HAD a PURPOSE! America HAD to WIN!
