African tribes would war with each other and sell the captured as slaves.

Africa had an excess of slaves, the US was in a growth period and needed more labor.

Simple economics.

In the past there have been slaves from all over the world and of all colors. That particular period of history simply had a predominance of African slaves available and the largest demand was from the US at the time.

From what I have been learning in my World History class, the Europeans basically started out wanting the different tribes' Natural Resources which led up to them taking over Africa. The example that was given to me, was that, the Europeans tried to bribe the different leaders with weapons and heavy machinery in exchange for their natural resources. Once 1 tribe received the weapons then the others followed which led to wars. After many wars the Europeans had realized that they had taken control over each village and decided to make their own changes. (like the language, the culture, and other every day habits)
