The 1960s had a great impact on society in many different ways. The Civil Rights Movement, removed Jim Crow racist laws that had been extant since Reconstruction, the Women's Liberation Movement restarted, as women could look forward to more personal freedom and rights. The Vietnam War, changed the outlook on the government and the wars it demands should be fought, with many refusing to accept the draft. Music became very important, not just in an entertainment, but as a political symbol as well. The Countercultures were direct rejections of the conservatism of the 1950s.

mods and rockers were before the hippies. after they vanished from publicity, the mods turned out to be hippies and the rockers turned out to be skinheads. This is incorrect, the mods became the Skinheads, Scooter Boys and Suede Heads, whilst the rockers became the back patch clubs, i.e. Hells angels, Outlaws and other 1% s clubs. The hippie was a way of living and style that evolved in the states. Musically they evolved from the beat nicks and folk music.

The easiest way to explain what the mods were is to watch the film Quadrophenia 1960s Mods & Rockers film
Mods and Rockers were two disparate youth sub-cultures during the 60s and 70s. Mods rode classic italian scooters (Vespas and Lambrettas), wore tailor-made suits and parka jackets, they were the into contemporary british music of the time such as bands like The Who and The Specials. Rockers rode bigger motorcycles and wore leathers, listened to Elvis and other rock and roll and were generally dirty bastards. So in answer to your question, only mods rode 'mopeds' (although they were actually scooters, slight difference)...and why? It was part of their culture and a cheap and stylish ride to go with their lifestyle.
The fights at Brighton pier certainly didn't have a referee! Mods have sort of died out now, and so have rockers, who have been replaced with punks. Most probably the rockers have won, though we will never know for sure.
