None of the Apache tribes made canoes since they mainly travelled on foot in the arid deserts of Arizona, southern Colorado and New Mexico. They also used horses when they could steal or trade for them. For crossing wide rivers they would hang on to their horse's neck or make small temporary rafts of driftwood to help them swim across.

Canoes were mainly used on the east and west coasts of North America and in the Great Lakes and eastern woodlands areas.

Did the Algonquins or Iroquois make dugout canoes?

Some of the Algonquian tribes made canoes from hollowed logs - the Powhatan of the Virginia tidewater area certainly did. Many other Algonquian tribes made canoes of birch bark over a timber frame, including the Ojibwe, Maliseet, Cree, Algonkin and Naskapi.Canoes made by the Iroquois tribes were generally of elm bark over a timber frame.

What did the Iroquois Indians make with the bark of the elm tree?

Elm grows everywhere in the Iroquois country - northern Pennsylvania and throughout New York state. It was widely used instead of birch bark for canoes, longhouses and even containers. Elm bark was gathered by men in spring or early summer; a vertical knife cut was made and the bark could be peeled off the tree in very large sheets. Often the entire tree would be cut down so that all its bark could be harvested. Fresh bark was always used whenever possible, since it tended to become brittle if stored for any length of time; if kept damp or in a shady spot it remains flexible for a long time. When used for making canoes, the inner smooth surface of the bark became the outside of the canoe. When used as roofing material the rough outer surface of the bark was laid facing outwards and tools were used to flatten out much of the roughness.

What were the Iroquois tools made of?

the Iroquois made canoes by chopping down huge trees and then lighting small fires in the logs. After burning out the middle, they would scoop out the ashes by using stone tools. They fashioned huge oars from the limbs of the trees. An giant canoe could hold up to 100 people.
