There is lots of evidence, such as the fact that most of the official soundtrack is Hawaiian oriented, often containing the word Hawaii in the title. Also, in the movie, spongebob winds up on the Californian coast. He most likely lives somewhere in between California and Hawaii, but certainly at least he lives in the Pacific Ocean.
