The Californian was estimated to be about 8 kilometres away from the Titanic when it sank.
At that time Californian was stopped due to the fact that they had spotted icebergs in their path, and was waiting for daylight so they could navigate through them.
The Californian Saw titanic Stress flares but thought they were fireworks so didnt help them out. Also they Turned off there Transmitter ilegaly so couldn't respond.
They say about 4 to 5 miles away but it was never positively established. The Californian supposedly turned their wireless operator off and the operator went to bed so they didn't get Titanic's distress messages.
The California was the closest ship to Titanic when she sank. They did not respond to the Titanic calls of distress because the wireless operator on the California was asleep because he was the only operator on board and had been working since dawn on the 14th. Another reason the California is important is because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the California. It was transporting an unknown cargo and some of her crew had only a week to prepare including the wireless operator who took the wrong chart with him and so did not know what ship they could see in the distance. If he had the chart then it would have told him that it was the Titanic and they might had made more of an attempt to contact her.
In the aftermath of the Titanic disaster, the American inquiry questioned the actions of Californian's captain, Stanley Lord. It came to light that both a Morse wireless call and Morse signal was made to Titanic when they saw there was a large liner nearby, to warn them that there were icebergs nearby. Those signals were ignored, and soon after, the wirelss was turned off. 10 minutes later, the Titanic struck the iceberg. Some of the crew of the Californian were still able to visually see the Titanic from a distance, saw rockets fired, and tried to contact the ship via Morse lamp. The wireless wasn't turned back on until about 3 hours after Titanic sank. Captain Lord's testimony was inconsistent as to how much he knew was going on, and why they didn't act (outside of Morse lamp) on rescuing survivors, even after the Carpathia raced into the scene. To this day, the role that the Californian played in the disaster is still controversial.
The Californian was believed to be five miles away.
The officers on the deck of the Californian, while watching Titanic's rockets, made the catastrophic conclusion that the vessel was summoning back her boats that might have strayed too far in the dark while fishing.
There were other ships on the water. Nearby were the Californian, the Mt.Temple, the Frankfurt, the Virginian and several others.
no the Carpathia was the first ship that came to the rescue of the Titanic. By the time it came it was daylight and many had died in the freezing cold waters. When the distress signal from Titanic was sent, the nearest ship, the Californian (i think it was called), wouldn't have made it in time before the ship sank
Some reports indicate that the radio operator on the Californian had turned his radio off after having received a rude complaint from the Titanic radio operator. The Titanic radio operator had complained that the frequent iceberg warnings from the Californian were interfering with him sending personal radio messages from the Titanic passengers.
There were many ships on the water in the area where Titanic was calling for help such as the Californian, the Frankfort, the Amerika, the Birma, the Mount Temple, and maybe some others, but the only one that responded, the Californian, was sixty miles away.

The Californian was the vessel that famously hovered less than twenty miles away when Titanic, the greatest ship in the world, sank.
The ship closer to the titanic was the Californian

In the Titanic we see that the situational irony found in the text is that eventhough The Californian was the ship closest to The Titanic, it would've been crucial if The Californian would'nt have turned off their scanner.
