sup i got the same question and im in year 7 doing an assignment about desertification and crap. its a hard one to answer cause there are so many ideas to stop or reverse it and its all political level plans and i need to look for some that are local or that are happening in a small group. i think its caused by such things as overgrazing and the locals have heaps of remidies for desertification. i don't know them yet that's what im researching still for. sorry if i didnt help with this but all im saying is that i don't think your going to get many people that are going to answer your question.

Yes: this process is called "desertification". The Sahara Desert is encroaching south upon the Sahel. The catalyst to this was the drought which occurred in Africa from 1968 to 1973, and the Sahel continues to be drought-prone, which in turn increases desertification. The Sahara desert is estimated to be growing at a rate of 0.6 km every year.
