After the dissolution, the site fell into disrepair, but the remains of the abbey still stand today as a historical monument.

The earliest recorded Viking raid on England was around 789 when three Viking long ships landed on the coast of Wessex. Not much is known about this incursion but an agent of the local Anglo-Saxon king was killed. In 793 Vikings plundered the monastery at Lindesfarne. The abbey was destroyed, the monks were killed or taken as slaves, ancient manuscripts were destroyed and the treasures of the abbey were taken. The monks could be sold in the European slave markets and the treasures could be converted into other valuable items to be sold or kept by the Viking leaders.

Monks were around for every single year of the Medieval Age. There were also monks in late Roman times, and there are still monks in modern times. Monks have been around for a good long while, and not all of them were Medieval. * The Medieval Age lasted from the 5th Century to the 15th.
