Africa is a large continent, and many countries use various time zones depending on their location and customs.

During normal time, Africa will be ahead of US Eastern Time (GMT -5) by from 4 to 8 hours. The least difference is for Cape Verde and the northwest coast (Mauritania, Western Sahara, Senegal) which is GMT -1. The most difference is for extreme eastern Africa (Somalia, Madagascar) which are GMT +3.

During Daylight Savings Time, the difference could be as little as 3 hours, if a country in Africa is not on DST when the US east coast is (EDT = GMT -4).
