Theere are a great many waterfalls in New Zealand, as the terrain is generally not flat and most areas get reasonable to high rainfall. Therefore there are many streams and rivers that run over several abrupt changes in level, creating waterfalls.

Three major river systems, Clutha, Waitaki, and Waikato each have several generating stations on them. The largest hydro station drains Lake Manapouri into Doubtful Sound. many more smaller stations.
