It's hard to tell. I've read estimates that the total precolumbian native population in the Western Hemisphere was about 20 million. Seeing as Canada represents a large section of this area, albiet much of that area is very frigid, I would guess it was around 3 million before Columbus. Add a century of plague and war to the mix and I would take a wild guess at anywhere from 100,000-1 million.

After Tecumseh and other Native Americans fled to British-held Canada, many Americans concluded that the British were actively supporting Native American resistance against American expansion. This perception fueled anti-British sentiment and intensified calls for war, contributing to the outbreak of the War of 1812. Americans believed that the British were inciting Native American tribes to attack frontier settlements, thereby threatening their security and territorial ambitions.
