From there, it would have moved from person to person inside the country. Since the virus can be present without showing symptoms for up to two days, no count could really be accurate in trying to separate those who came in with the disease versus those who acquired the virus after arriving in the country.
As of August 24, 2009, there have been approximately 2700 people affected in India, with a steadily rising death toll, currently at 72 deaths with the loss of three more people on 8/24 in Maharashtra. Twenty-three people in Pune have also died so far.
People in Maharashtra have been encouraged to avoid crowded places and stay home
instead of leaving for non-essential travel. Schools and movie theaters are closed to contain the spread within the state that has been hardest hit.
