The British trading companies were present in India from around 1600 a.d. which at this time was known as the India Empire. The British East India Company, in 1612 started to build factories in Surat under an agreement lead by King James I and Mughal Emperor Nuruddin Salim Jahangir. In return Emperor Jahangir would take a cut of the profits. Over the next 150 years the East India company backed by the crown and through negotiation with local Mughal Emperors and leaders. Over time It increased it's influence, taking control of towns and cities such as Bombay and Calcutta. In 1858 the rule of the British East India Company was transferred to Queen Victoria and at this point it became under British rule and became official part of the British Empire. Governors were dispatched to the cities that had formerly been owned by the British East India company and this began the true start of the British rule of India to the point that in 1876 Queen Victoria was proclaimed "Empress of India". During the British Raj (British reign) of India there were many uprisings which were quelled by force. It is not unfair to say that the British were responsible for many atrocities, however taken in perspective for the age this was not unusual and to be fair, not much worse than those caused by the local warring Mughals. There were also many benefits such the import of technologies, industrialisation and construction of railway systems and engines, most of which are still in use today, some eighty years after the British left. India remained under British control until 1947 when India was returned to self governance through the actions of civil disobedience lead by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi).
