Yes, when he thought Bella had died, after Alice saw Bella jump off a cliff, he tried to confirm it by calling Bella's house. The same day Charlie goes to one of his friends funeral so when he calls Jacob Black answers and tells him that Charlie is "at the funeral" he thinks it's Bella's funeral. Since he's not planning to live without her, he decides to go to Italy to provoke the Volturi. He clearly knows you don't provoke the Volturi unless you want to die. So after the Volturi rejects his petition to die, he decides to get them mad by revealing what they really are, vampires. He goes up high were the sunlight can hit him so he can show to the people what they really are.
