Remember that Hooper the marine biologist did the autopsy. The bite marks / lacerations (how the flesh is carved) are indicative of what type of shark, including a suggestion of size.

Amazing thing is that Jaws is only 3.5 feet longer than the largest Great Whites ever caught. (Jaws = 25', largest captured GW's approach 22')

So while it appears to be ridiculously/impossibly large, id say that there have been 25 foot GW's out there.

FUN FACT: They have attached sat nav trackers to GW's and some swim around Perth (western Australia) before going non stop, amazingly fast, to Africa. Some dive down to over 1km in depth.
