Sgt. Waters despised CJ Memphis because CJ represented everything that Waters hated about himself and his ethnicity. Waters recalled a time when he was serving in France and there was a Negro soldier that was chosen to entertain the white and French soldiers in a cafe. The soldier dressed up as a woman and paraded around singing and dancing while the White soldiers called him demeaning names and dehumanized him. Waters was repulsed by this display of ignorance and killed the soldier because he was an embarrassment to all Negroes. Negroes like Waters who did everything possible to not be Black and in fact found virtue in emulating the White man.
