because since ancient times the coast had been used for trading.The coastal areas of India e.g.goa ,madras were also used for travelling and navigation.They were used to send goods to other countries and recieve goods from them ,like our contacts with Australia.

first of all,as india is a peninsula,it is very easy for ships to stop and dock at the ports.secondly,most of the ships passing from one end of the world to another often pass near india which is in south india so they most likely dock there for trade.
