I haven't seen it but i wouldn't say it was 'revolutionary'.

I would answer that indeed it was revolutionary as a film production based on the 12 million cost which at the time was the most expensive film Hollywood had produced. The reality of the film was confirmed by the efforts made to pay for very expensive and authentic props and costumes. The use of three 110 foot towers which the director, Stanley Kubrick used to direct the battle scenes so that the audiences could see the actual strategies and tactics used by the Roman legions was in 1960, was a rarity in itself.

Another revolutionary aspect of this film is the selection of Russell Metty in charge of Photography. Metty selected the newest of wide screen media, Super Technirama 70.
