A US passport will do. However, France is a part of the Schengen territories. Basically this means you can stay in France for up to 90 days on a normal short stay visa (given upon entry to the country). You must then be out of France at least 90 days before you are able to return again for a visit. If you wish to stay longer you will have to apply for a different kind of visa.
