As an editor of educational materials, I would write "North Africa"...or you could say "the northern part/section of Africa".

For example, there are more jungles and bodies of water in the Sub Saharan, while Northern Africa is mostly covered by the Sahara desert. Different African tribes are in each section of Africa and religions can be different too. Different languages are spoken.
