You may be interested in reading about the "sentience quotient" by a scientist named Robert Freitas. Thing about the SQ though, is that it measures neurobiological efficiency, how cells communicate with one another based on a Physics and computer science perspective, its got nothing to do with I.Q. For instance, an SQ of 20, is what all human beings posses, regardless of I.Q. Whether you have an I.Q. of 80, or 280 like Stephen Hawking, the S.Q. is the same, according to what is being measured. Freitas believes that human intelligence can only be increased with nannites, which would be inserted somehow into glial cells to help inter-neuron communication. Now, the human brain is capable of some truly fantastic feats; it is capable for example, of running Physics and Calc equations, entirely mentally, without the aid of paper. It is capable of deciphering programming algorithms to be able to crack any computer system. It is capable of "seeing" an idea, and rendering it as a hyper realistic drawing, usingly pencil and paper. It is also capable of playing 50 Chess games at once blindfolded. However to posses such intelligence, a person knows how to pilot an aircraft, just by discering the "logic" of the flight controls, and how wind behaves, that is almost impossible. In the episode where "L" pilots a helicopter, Light asks him "you know how to fly choppers?" L replied, saying something along the lines of "everything has its pattern," implying, that he did not read manuals, or take classes, on sheer perception of patterns, and being able to logically arrange them, he used his incredible intellect, to teach himself how to fly a helicopter. Like I said at the begining of this, that implies an I.Q. easily around 5,000. No, sorry, but that is the stuff of fiction, amazing though the human brain is. L's intelligence is almost god-like. What you need to understand is that his intellect goes well beyond "gifted" or "Savant" levels. While it may be possible, through rigorous regimentation of puzzles, imagination training, meditation, and puzzle Video Games, to increase I.Q., permanently, if the training is severe enough, even to savant levels, its not possible to become someone like "L" your brain would fry. Myself personally I was intrigued by the character; I majored in Psychology in college, so I found "L" to be a very interesting character. The only other anime/fictional character who compares to L in terms of intelligence is Lupin III, however his stories are slapstick comedy meant for a lay audience, rarely is the intelligence he has actually shown. The human brain, is indeed capable of holding all the collected knowledge of this planet, and be able to apply it, however, it is not possible to be someone like "L," someone so smart, that, they just watch one fight, and they know how to Box, just from logically "discerning" everything. Someone so smart they look at the cockpit of a helicopter as if though it were a rubix cube, and then suddenly they know how to pilot it because they "solved" the "puzzle." Nobody is that smart, nobody; even Psychologists who study Savants will tell you that much.
