Sure couples do it all the time. If you are with your boyfriend, you live together and you knew he had kids to begin with then there must be a reason you are second guessing your relationship after 4yrs. Being married is not going to change your situation. You need to ask yourself why you are questioning your relationship and taking care of his children after 4yrs and sort out your feelings. If the only issue is that you are not married yet after 4yrs and you are caring for children that are not yours then you are going to have to decide if you are willing to stay in this relationship or not.
