It is tradition to claim there are five Great Lakes, but in actual fact there are only four. What we call Lakes Michigan and Huron constitute, from a hydrological perspective, just one lake that contains two large lobes. As such, Canada and the US share the four Great Lakes.

The Great Lakes do not "make up" Canada and the US; they are shared by Canada and the US. The International Boundary runs through the Great Lakes.

It is commonly believed that there are five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie and Ontario. Lakes Huron and Michigan, however, are hydrologically just one body of water with two large lobes. In actual fact, therefore, there are only four Great Lakes.
