Southern slaves during the war went from liabilities to assets. When the north were taking the south out, the south realized they had way more slaves, than anything else left. They started putting the slaves out there to do battle, and keep the south in the fight....imagine that? The north is opposed to slavery, and the Africans are the slaves in the south, and fighting the north to keep things the way the were....President Lincoln got wind of who the north was truly fighting, and signed the Emancipation Proclamation, to make the southern slaves have no reason to fight, but get out of the way, so he could figure out a way to keep that union together.
Many were able to flee to the North during the chaos and fog of battle. In addition, many then joined the ranks of the Northern military to help defeat the Confederacy.
The Southern economy was critically dependent on slave labour during the Civil War and the years preceding it because it was a rural society. However, the Northern economy was not dependent on slave labour as they were more industrialised but there were still families in the North who had slaves. Thomas Jefferson for example, although opposed to slavery, inherited and owned over one hundred slaves; he was not dependent on them but they were still there. It's the South's dependence on slaves that made them a slave society as opposed to a society with slaves.

The American Revolutionary War created a new form of government, a Federal form of government. That was revolutionary. The American Civil War was not a Revolutionary War. It was a Civil War. It was brother against brother and state against state. It killed many men on both sides. It tore up the infrastructure of the Southern part of the United States. While many slaves were freed during the war, most of the slaves would be freed after the war ended. Unlike the Revolutionary War, which began "With the shot heard round the world," the social changes that came from the Civil War came after the war ended.
