The Libyans declared independence at the ending of the occupation by the Allied Powers. Libya was captured from Italy in 1943 (during World War II) and administered by the Allied Powers through the war and by the UK and France until 1951 when they gave the country back to King Idris.
Libya was ceded by the Ottoman Empire and was Italian North Africa from 1912 to 1927, and was named Libya in 1934. Italy gave up any claim to Libya in 1947.
