Yes there are two main types of law in Canada. I believe you are talking about Public law and Private law. Below is a thorough (somewhat informal) breakdown of what I know of the Canadian law system (learnt this from grade 11 law). CANADIAN LAW could be broken into two categories. 1.Procedural Law(Rules)

- includes court procedures

- how to "do" (carry out? - not quite sure what word to use) substantive law

- basically rules that allow you to enforce the laws 2. Substantive Law (Statue and Case law)

- laws that are passed by the parliament/legislature

- includes a person's rights and obligations of the law

- applies to everyone/anyone

SUBSTANTIVE LAW could be broken into two sub categories. a. Public Law

- disputes between the government and an individual

- one side would have the "burden of proof" for which they would have to prove their argument beyond reasonable doubt (informal explanation: have to prove that there is a 98% chance that what they are saying is correct)

PUBLIC LAW could be broken down into stands of law i. Criminal Law

- i.e. murder, thief, robber

ii. Constitutional Law

- i.e. Quebec's separation from Canada

iii. Administrative Law b. Private Law (also called Civil Law)

- dispute between an individual and another individual

- usually has to do with money/compensation

- to "win" one would just have to prove that there is a 51% chance that what they are saying is true.

PRIVATE LAW could be broken into strands as well i. Family Law

- i.e. child custody, divorce, wills

ii. Contract Law

- like those dealt with on Judge Judy

iii. Tort Law

- i.e. one person is injured by another and wants to be compensated

iv. Property Law

- i.e. selling your house or car

v. Labour Law
