To use the playstion3 remote for Blu-ray movies what else do you need on your 1080p to get Blu-ray?

The PS3 works best when connected to the 1080P HDTV with HDMI cables and the new slim PS3 may then even allow your HDTV remote to Play the Blue-Ray movie that you also need to get Blue-Ray. I know with my PS3 slim 120 GB model connected with HDMI cables to the Sony BR6 HDTV I can use my HDTV remote for Blue-Ray and DVD movies played in the PS3.

As an HD television will also handle any of the formats, it is worth experimenting with the set up to see if 720p discs are displayed better when the player outputs the native format or in a converted format.

The PS3 will upscale to 1080P if the system is set to upscale. You will not get 1080p you will get 720P upscaled to 1080P. I find that DVDs movies are better on the upscaled format, but they are not of the quality of Blu Ray.

If the TV is 1080p capable, it will switch automatically when it receives a 1080p signal. Keep in mind that not all cable and satellite systems will have this service. Look for the INFO button on the remote to see what standard you are receiving.

Why won't a 1080P TV receive a 1080P signal?
Broadcast television currently does not use 1080p. The HD formats in use at present are 720p and 1080i. The "i" stands for interlaced and it means that on a single pass of the screen half of the image is built up. The second pass sees the remainder of the image added to the first half. A full image is delivered 25 or 30 times each second. A 1080p signal delivers a full image on every pass, 50 or 60 times each second. 1080p therefore needs double the amount of data compared to 1080i. Broadcast infrastructure and the extra bandwidth requirements prevent 1080p being broadcast. 1080p is limited at present to Bluray and other local HD sources such as computers and game consoles. Don't expect to see 1080p from your television service provider any time soon. The 1080p identification on the television says that it will display 1080p but of course can only do this with a 1080p incoming signal.

The PS3 will play DVDs and if your are connected to a 1080P HDTV with a HDMI cable like I have the movies are upgraded to near 1080p quality. It has been over a year since I last used the Sony VCR/DVD Player once I saw the quality of DVDs though the PS3.
