It is general conscensus among historians that Lt. Col. G. A. Custer's body suffered the following injuries: - A gunshot wound to the left breast, just below the left nipple, likely his fatal wound. - A gunshot wound to the left temple, likely post-mortem. - An 11-inch gash all the way to the bone in the right thigh, likely post-mortem. - A slight wound to the right forearm, likely a bullet fragment from one of his other wounds. - The removal of one of his finger tips, at the first joint. - An arrow shaft shoved into his penis (this information was withheld until after the death of his wife, Elizabeth, in 1933). - He was NOT scalped, probably because he had his hair cut very short just prior to the battle. Please note that it was a tradition, during or just following a battle, for Indians to mutilate the bodies of the enemy on the battlefield so that they could not pursue them (or continue the war) in the afterlife.
