The Mayan civilization qualifies as the most important culture that rose in the Yucatan Peninsula, around the 3rd century. This expansion is known as the "Classic Mayan Period", which suddenly ended on the 10th century due to a population crash -- the most likely explanation is an ecological collapse -- whereas most major cities were abandoned. The Mayan culture however, continued to exist for several centuries well after contact with Europeans was established; the last Mayan stronghold was conquered by 1697 AD at the hands of Spanish conquistadors.
