That even though he said he wanted to kill himself beforehand, he didn't want to die now.
That he had never left their neighborhood before the trip to Windrixville.
That he is pretty bad off because he broke his back and will never be able to walk again.
Thats it...
I mean later on when they come back to the hospital right before he dies, he tells him to "Stay gold Ponyboy, stay gold." but that is when Dally is there too.
