It was strictly forbidden, along with all inter-sectional trading.
But both governments occasionally turned a blind eye. And aside from that, there were always unscrupulous war profiteers willing to break the rules, not caring that it would lengthen the war - a breed hated by the front-line troops.
Northerners did not want to compete for gold with slaveholders using slave labor or with free blacks.
Because of the invention of the cotton gin it grew. In 1793 there were 10,000 bales of 500 pounds, 1801 production reached 100,000 pounds, and by 1835 over a million bales were produced. This was all on the southern plantations and the need for slaves grew as the production of cotton grew. Sea Island cotton was grown along the coast of Georgia and South Carolina.
As the war casualties climbed, the Union needed even more troops. African Americans were ready to volunteer. Not all white northerners were ready to accept them, but they had to. Lincoln appointed an official to help Blacks be accepted by the Union army.

In the Southern States, slaves did almost all of the work. The Southern states relied heavily on cotton and they had slaves do the work. Slaves would pick cotton which isn't very pleasant, and before the Cotton Gin, slaves had to seperate the cotton fibers from their seeds.
The south was an economy based on cotton, rice, indigo, and tobacco. If you look at the number of bales of cotton produced after the cotton gin was invented there is a direct relationship between the number of slaves and bales of cotton. Much of the cotton was sold to England and it was thought by the planters that the English would come to aid them in the civil war. The truth was the cotton wasn't needed by England because they all ready a lot in storage. The fact that the southern economy was not industrial is a big factor in loosing the civil war and the problems in recovery from the war.
Well...all they did was use big farms(plantations) to harvest cotton.

It was the commodity that was in demand all over the world, and the basis for Southern wealth and prestige.
Cotton was a prized crop in the American colonies and later in the United States. There was a worldwide demand for this crop and it was used to make all types of clothing. The US Southern climate was ideal for growing cotton and much of it was purchased by the Northern industrial US States and in England. The demand seemed to have no limits. When the cotton gin was invented in allowed for an easier way to remove seeds from cotton. More cotton was produced and sold worldwide as its demand seemed never to cease. With that said, cotton became a boom crop because of the demand of it in textile mills in the US and in Europe.
About 1/5 of all northerners
The cotton gin allowed the growers to grow more cotton. Before the gin was invented the cotton seeds were hard to get out of the boll. The cotton boll is closely packed and very hard to get all the seeds removed and they had to do it by hand. The gin had teeth that when they were turned the handle it pulled the cotton apart and the seeds fell to the bottom. By having the ability to do this they could grow more cotton, buy more slaves to pick/process the cotton, and they could sell more cotton. Most of the cotton was sold to the Britain and when the civil war started the southern states expected it to help them because of the cotton. They didn't need it since they had bought so much all ready. The plantations really began to grow because of the invention and the population of slaves also grew. People became very rich and the south more powerful.
Northern View Of Slavery- A vocal minority of northerners were abolitionists or people who wanted to end slavery. They believed that slavery was morally wrongs. Abolitionists favored a gradual end while others demanded that all slavery was outlawed at once. Not all northerners wanted to end slavery Southern Views Of Slavery Many southerns belied that god intend that black people should provide the labor for white "civilized" society
When the cotton gin was invented it gave cotton growers a way to grow more cotton. More cotton meant more slaves, and more slaves meant more production. With production going that meant more could be sold and that also means more money. Money gave the plantation owners riches beyond belief and they lived very well off the slave labor. About the same time in England the spinning cotton Jenny was invented so they needed the cotton the south grew. The conjunction of all of these things gave the southern plantation society unlimited power. When the civil war started they thought England would help them because they needed the imported cotton, but the English where houses were full of bales of cotton.
