In the United States slogans used in public demonstrations and in the news media have been used to express the the need for womens' empowerment. Here is a brief list of such slogans and their meanings:

1. Equal pay for equal work. This slogan developed over the issue made by women's groups that in many jobs, men were paid more than women for essentially performing the same work. This has been an effective form of protest and indeed has resulted in equality in the workplace. In fact Congress passed a bill which became law and is referred to as the Equal Pay Act.

2. Freedom of Choice. This slogan was and is highly controversial in that it supports a woman's right to "chose" to have an abortion.

3. There is no equality until women elect lawmakers. This is a short version of the right to vote within the women's suffrage movement in the early 1920's in the USA. This resulted in the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1920 allowing all citizens age 21 or over to vote.
